The Physicist Dr. Andreas Thust | Köln
Electron microscopes are cool quantum machines! They allow you to look at objects all the way down to their atomic building blocks. The processes in the microscope are governed by quantum mechanical principles. Driven by his fascination with quantum physics, Dr. Thust embodies more than 35 years of expertise in the field of electron microscopy. Among numerous highly cited publications and worldwide patents – too many details to list here – these two achievements of Dr. Thust stand out in particular:
- He was awarded the Ernst Ruska Prize, arguably the world's most prestigious award in the field of electron microscopy. The award is named after Nobel laureate Ernst Ruska and is presented every two years.
- Dr. Thust is known as the person who resolved the so-called Stobbs factor problem. This was a fundamental mystery in atomic resolution microscopy that the international research community had tried in vain to solve for 15 years.
